President of Hungary János Áder officially opened the 15th European Maccabi Games. The flame was lit by Judit Polgár, the best female chess player of all time and Ágnes Keleti, the oldest Olympic champion alive.
The European Maccabi Games are held every four years and are always held two years after the Maccabiah Games are held in Israel. European delegations send their best Jewish sportsmen and women to the competition.
Held at Új Hidegkuti Nándor Stadium in Budapest, the Opening Ceremony began with the march of the delegations and ended with the host Hungarian team arriving last. Each of the 42 delegations poured colorful sand into a Star of David as a symbol of diversity and unity upon entering the stadium. Neil Kaplan had the honor for Poland and his son, Harry, had the honor of carrying the Polish flag at the Opening Ceremonies.
Neil Kaplan will be competing in the cycling time trial and road race competitions later this week and Harry Kaplan,will captain the Polish fencing team which starts action later today.Harry will compete in the Junior Sabre and Foil competitions in both individual and team events.
Speaking about the Opening Ceremonies, Neil Kaplan said “I am honored to represent Poland with my son Harry on such a momentous occasion. Having been involved with Team Poland since 2017, I am proud to be part of the best of Jewish Polish athletes at the Games. We are looking forward to competing this week. Kudos to the Maccabi organization who did such a tremendous job in creating a spectacular event that will be remembered for a lifetime.”
In 2017 in Israel, Team Poland garnered 2 Gold and 1 Bronze medals in what was a record setting performance for the Polish squad at the worldwide Games in Israel.
Harry Kaplan said, “Carrying the flag last night on behalf of the Polish Jewish community was such a great honor for me and even more exciting to share this great event with my Dad. My sister Julie is the only Junior medalist in Polish Maccabiah games history (bronze, 2017) and I will give my all to continue our family legacy in Polish fencing.”
More than 2,300 athletes from 42 different nations will compete in a total of 19 disciplines at the European Maccabi Games. Prague hosted the first ever European Maccabi Games in 1929, followed by Antwerp a year later. After a 30-year hiatus, the Jewish games finally returned to European soil as Copenhagen hosted the 1959 competition.
